I recently had the honor of joining Danielle Elliott Smith on her Hope Comes to Visit podcast to share my journey of turning an SOS into a Story of Strength—and how that experience fuels my mission to change how the medical community addresses maternal morbidity.

Danielle’s podcast is rooted in honesty and vulnerability, offering space for real stories that spark deeper understanding. In our conversation, we reflected on our shared experience of traumatic childbirth and the troubling reality that women’s voices are too often ignored—even in life-threatening moments.

This is where open leadership becomes essential. Open leadership is about listening first, creating space for perspectives that are often silenced, and allowing lived experiences to shape solutions. By openly sharing my own story, I’ve been able to combine those personal lessons with my background in bioengineering to launch Story of Strength.

Through this work, we are not only gathering data and insights but also fostering dialogue that leads to lasting and meaningful change. Our goal is clear: to educate, raise awareness, and ultimately prevent maternal complications.

True leadership doesn’t come from having all the answers—it comes from having the courage to share, to listen, and to co-create solutions that matter.
