Using Authenticity as a Leadership Superpower

As we enter the first full week of spring, many of us welcome the official change of seasons as an opportunity for renewed optimism and fresh beginnings. It is also a perfect time to consider how you are embracing your authenticity as a superpower can become a catalyst for a leadership breakthrough.

I have spent a lot of time recently reflecting on what it means to be an authentic leader and why it is incredibly relevant and important in 2026, as many of us (and our teams) are facing the challenge of navigating 'information overload.'

I believe that authenticity is the antidote to 'information overload' because it builds genuine trust.

Most people view leadership as about having the answers and the ability to guide people effectively toward a shared goal, while being polished and projecting confidence. But I believe that impactful, open leadership requires more than poise and the ability to manage a team.

In chapter 9 of my book Open Up! Step Into the Leader You Are Meant to Be, I talk about the importance of finding the courage to be authentic and how you can harness it as a superpower. Integrated, authentic leadership translates into courageous strategic action driven by values and long-term goals.  Real leadership starts when you’re willing to be honest, especially when it’s uncomfortable.

You may be wondering what this could look like, so here are a few examples to get you thinking about how you can use authenticity as a leader:

• Naming a problem everyone else is avoiding

• Admitting uncertainty instead of pretending you have it all figured out

• Sharing a perspective that might not be popular, but is necessary. 

Or consider this: what is one truth about yourself that you could share?  What's one truth or new insight you are realizing about yourself?

Authenticity in leadership enables you to lead with consistency, courage, and transparency even in the most challenging circumstances. Your authentic superpower comes from continuity, integrity, and self-knowledge.
